The ultimate guide to which iPhones are waterproof

While modern iPhones can survive a lot, including some degree of submersion in water, they're far from being completely waterproof. It's more accurate to call them water-resistant. When you take your phone everywhere, it's only natural to worry about water damage and how water-resistant your device truly is. Bathrooms, fishing trips or lounging by the pool could take a wet turn in seconds. A plunge used to mean a watery demise for your electronic devices. Fortunately, modern iPhones alleviate some of those concerns with water-resistant technology and design choices that help mitigate damage during unintended dives.

The water resistance of a device depends on its Ingress Protection (IP) rating. This rating determines its level of dust and water protection. The higher the second number, the better it resists water damage. Most modern iPhones have an IP68 rating, meaning they're safe from accidental water exposure. However, for more peace of mind and better protection, our Frē Series can help protect your phone even further after taking that plunge into the deep end.

Are iPhones waterproof?

iPhones are water-resistant, not waterproof. They can withstand a certain amount of water exposure in specific conditions, but none are rated to be submerged indefinitely or at depths greater than 6 meters.

IP ratings have two numbers — 1 through 6 for dust and dirt, and 1 through 9 for water. While the iPhone 7 is the oldest model with an IP67 rating, newer devices have an IP68 rating. An IP67 rating means the device can withstand being submerged 1 meter in water for up to 30 minutes. An IP68 rating allows for continuous submersion up to whatever depth was specified by the manufacturer.

Even if an iPhone has a high IP rating, cracks or dents in the device could allow water to enter. Repeated submersion can also wear away at the device's protection over time, rendering it vulnerable to damage. While water exposure isn't likely to destroy your device the first time, it's recommended to keep it as dry as possible.

iPhones undergo rigorous testing in a controlled setting, which includes submerging them in fresh water. Salty or chlorinated water could damage the device as it evaporates and leaves mineral deposits behind.

Although iPhones are deemed water resistant, Apple doesn't provide standard warranty coverage against water damage. You’ll need to shop for an AppleCare+ plan or one offered by your phone carrier to find potential coverage for accidental damage protection to replace a water-damaged iPhone.

What iPhones are waterproof?

Since the iPhone 7's release, all iPhones have some degree of water resistance. However, the exact level varies, even among phones with the same IP ratings. Generally, newer models have better water resistance, but all models from the 12 Series onward meet the same stringent standards and earn an IP68 rating for a depth of 6 meters.

iPhones with an IP67 rating and a maximum water depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes:

  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
  • iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
  • iPhone X and XR
  • iPhone SE (second and third generation)

iPhones with an IP68 rating and a maximum water depth of 2 meters for 30 minutes:

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone XS and XS Max

iPhones with an IP68 rating and a maximum water depth of 4 meters for 30 minutes:

  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max

iPhones with an IP68 rating and a maximum water depth of 6 meters for 30 minutes:

  • iPhone 12 Series (including the mini, Pro and Pro Max)
  • iPhone 13 Series (including the mini, Pro and Pro Max)
  • iPhone 14 Series (including the Plus, Pro and Pro Max)
  • iPhone 15 Series (including the Plus, Pro and Pro Max)
  • iPhone 16 Series (including the e, Plus, Pro and Pro Max)

Despite some degree of water resistance, iPhones should never be submerged intentionally for any length of time, regardless of their IP ratings.

Are the new iPhones waterproof?

The iPhone 16 has an impressive IP68 rating, which means it's designed to survive submersion for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 6 meters. While these devices typically survive sudden drops into water, they're not built for frequent, continuous submersion.

Apple uses advanced technologies to achieve high water resistance ratings. The devices are built to prevent water from entering delicate electrical components, reducing the likelihood of water damage. The iPhone 16 has seals and gaskets in vulnerable areas, such as around the screen and charging port, to prevent water from entering the device. Additionally, internal components have hydrophobic coatings to help repel water that manages to seep in, protecting the underlying electronics.
