Why is the connector on the serial pod different than the connector on the end of the HP sync cable?
The serial pod was designed to allow for the direct connection of serial peripherals such as GPS receivers and bar code readers. Since these devices are typically connected to the serial port on a PC, the same type of serial port was required on the serial pod. This allows for easy connection of these devices. The drawback of this type of port on the serial pod is that in order to sync the iPAQ through the serial pod, a null modem cable or adapter is required.
