Why can't I adjust my volume, skip songs, or use the microphone with my iPod touch 3rd generation when it is in the Armor™ Series case?

The headphone jack for the iPod® touch 3rd generation is a 4-conductor jack, which allows for use of volume adjustment, song skipping and microphone when used with compatible headphones. Customers are able to use the 4-conductor headphone jack with complete functionality in the Defender™ or Impact™ Series iPod touch cases. The OtterBox Armor™ Series case for iPod touch however has a 3-conductor jack built into it, therefore a customer using 4-conductor headphones can still listen to audio, but will not be able to adjust the volume, skip songs, or use the microphone functionality through their headphones.
