Not as good as you thought
I loved my otter box. It would protect my phone any time I dropped it or did any thing to damage it (besides water). It would fall out of my pocket when i was on my bike and then i would run over it on my bike and there would be no scratch. You get the point. But the other day I left it on the driveway. I know it was not a good idea but its too late now. I think you know where this is going but my dad and his Prius ran it over. I don't know if the case should of protected my phone but it did not. The case has no damage and the phone looks just like new but it won't turn on. I even had it diagnosed and they could not find the problem, but what can you do. Bottom line don't have high expectations.

Beat the Atlantic Ocean
I've had this case for nearly two years. It can be a little bulky but I wanted extra protection. That extra protection delivered when I dropped by phone unknowingly in the shores of Atlantic Beach, NC a week ago. By the time I noticed my phone was missing and retraced it was 100 yards back. Half buried in sand with the surf rolling over it. I picked it up and did not see any water in it and when I turned it on, presto, working iPhone. Dry iPhone. Awesome!

Tougher Than Concrete
I bought my Otter Box Defender the same day I bought my iPhone 3GS. I've had both for nearly two years. I tend to have an occasional clumsy streak, which among other things which haven't gone so well, has resulted in my iPhone hitting the pavement, rocks, concrete garage floor, etc., many times. So far the iPhone, wrapped in the Defender, always comes up smiling and working fine. Without the Otter Box, I reckon I would either be on my 5th or 6th iPhone by now, or have been driven by economics back to a dumb phone.
I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to own the same phone or other device for a long time.
I recommend it despite it's singular flaw - the belt clip is abysmal. It breaks so easily, you'd think it was made of thin glass, and before it breaks, it gnaws on belts with an insatiable appetite. It baffles me why Otter Box does redesign the thing.

Klutz Proof
I bought a Defender for my iPhone 3 nearly five years ago. It has been wonderful. I wasn't in the habit of dropping phones, but dropped my new iPhone three times within the first week. Thank goodness for the Defender!!! I carry it everywhere including out on the lawn. My old phone looks like it's fresh out of its packaging!! The only problem has been the belt clip which wears out my belts and the holster which broke. Customer Service provided a new holster without question or delay. I would purchase a Defender before investing in a costly insurance plan!!

I have seen many websites claiming the Otterbox Defender is water resistant, I do alot of cycling in inclement weather, I need something that will not allow the ingress of water but does not have to deal with pressurised water. Will the defender series prevent water reaching the phone. P.S. Please don't redirect me to your waterproof series it is impractical for what I'm looking for.1 year, 11 months ago
