When we heard about Martin’s Africa trip, we knew it would be a great opportunity to test out the uniVERSE case and a collection of modules. It didn’t take too much convincing to get Martin on board. He was up for helping us out and liked the idea of exploring new ways to capture pictures with his phone. He set out for Africa with the olloclip 4-in-1 Lens, the PolarPro PowerPack Battery, the SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive and the PolarPro Trippler Tripod.

Africa is a place near and dear to Martin’s heart, as his family have kept a residence on the island of Zanzibar for over ten years. On his most recent journey to the continent, Martin spent a month climbing Kilimanjaro, exploring the Serengeti via hot air balloons, meeting some of the world’s oldest tribes in the remote corners of Tanzania and enjoying the spectacular Indian Ocean off the continent’s East Coast. Along the way, Martin brought his phone and uniVERSE Case System to capture the journey as intimately as possible.

The trip started with a seven-day climb up the infamous Mt. Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route. The trademarks of this route are extreme biodiversity, from lush jungles to glacial ice fields that present amazing photo opportunities. The trek was hit with all kinds of weather from blistering sunshine to whiteout snowstorms with temperatures in the teens.

… this environment needed a flexible and durable photo capturing system.

Many other cameras on the trail couldn’t handle the condensation or were packed away when the cold drained the battery. The beauty of a smartphone is that it fits between your inside layers, making it both accessible and functional as your body heat keeps the battery alive.

When I'm this remote, running out of storage space on my phone is not an option. With the SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive's 128 GB of capacity, that was never a concern on the mountain.

Serengeti

Following the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the journey went to three different areas of the Serengeti in search of the great migration. There was no better way to experience this wealth of wildlife than from above, so hot air balloons were used to quietly glide over the majestic landscape. This vantage point was perfect for the olloclip module as the wide angle lens allowed Martin to capture stunning vistas, whereas the telephoto lens could capture details on the ground.

After close encounters with elephants, leopards and lions, Martin sought out the Datoga and Hadzabe tribes in Tanzania, the latter of which is genetically documented to be one of the oldest tribes in the world. This became an opportunity for portraits and capturing their ancient ways of hunting, singing and dancing.

Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania, is nicknamed Spice Island as it’s home to some of the most exotic spices in the world. Martin sought out local fishermen to prepare authentic meals that used these incredibly potent local spices. Zanzibar historically has been occupied by several colonizing countries and this international influence on cooking, architecture and culture makes Zanzibar a truly unique melting pot. From the narrow streets of Stone Town to the mile-long white beaches, Zanzibar is a photographer’s dream. Throughout Martin’s adventures in Africa, the goal was always the same: showcase how the flexibility and functionality of the OtterBox uniVERSE Case System helps you capture better content and increase your ability as a visual storyteller. There’s no other camera system like it, and because it fits in your pocket there’s no limit to where it can go.

PolarPro Trippler Tripod

Most filmmakers cringe when they hear the words travel and tripod in the same sentence. Conventional tripods are clunky and cumbersome, which means they get left behind a lot especially when you’re on the road or carrying all the gear yourself. The PolarPro Trippler Tripod module changes all that for your smartphone because it is so lightweight and collapses into a small handle so easily. To put it in perspective, there were times on Kilimanjaro where I carried it inside my empty water bottle as you’re always compressing space on the mountain.

PolarPro PowerPack Battery

When your phone runs out of juice it can ruin your day. Especially when you miss that one shot you wanted. To reach Kilimanjaro’s summit, we hiked for six hours through the night. Just as first light crept over the horizon, my phone died from the cold and I was devastated because I had no way to capture the sunrise at 19,000 feet. That’s when I remembered the PolarPro Power Pack Battery module and because of it I was able to immortalize that epic moment.

SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive

If you’re anything like me, you take a lot of photos. A lot. Add video to the mix and suddenly your phone is out of storage faster than expected. The SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive is a lifesaver because out in the field you don’t always have time to clean up your cloud or dump content onto a laptop. The SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive becomes a trusted friend when you’re nearing capacity and there’s still plenty of daylight left.
