Rated 2 out of 5 Big Let Down My perception of Otterbox prior to purchasing the Preserver was that they made the best product on the market for a waterproof cell phone case. My opinion after owning one for the past 8 months is quite different. I did my research ahead of time and saw some negative comments about sound quality and poor quality, but dismissed them, making the assumption it was "the purchasers" issue. Well, unfortunately I should have paid attention. Sound quality was horrible. The majority of the people I spoke to while my phone was in this case said it sounded like I was in a tunnel and they could hardly hear me. I tried everything and it made no significant difference. It was to the point where I wouldn't call anyone without my hands free device. The other issue is the poor quality in general. The water proof webbing that covers the ear piece and speakers basically disintegrated over time and by the time I quit using it, there was no water proof protection anymore. So, basically the whole reason I bought the case, failed. Furthermore, when I went to make a warranty claim I was faced with more issues in that the magic 4 digit code that one needs to make a claim is placed in such a position that one can't see it without a significant magnification apparatus. This to me is an attempt to dissuade people from making warranty claims. Not cool. But, to be fair, I will say that the case was great in terms of shock protection and I was confident with the fact that I could have it in my back pocket while working in a shop setting and not have to worry about my phone getting beat up if it got sat on or fell on the ground. I would say that this case is well suited for intermittent use for protection from water damage if a person is going to be in snow or around water, but otherwise I would never buy it again unless they come up with some major improvements. I have recently purchased the Defender series to see if it is more suitable, and thus far it has been doing great. Hopefully this experience will restore my original perception to some extent. Rated 1 out of 5 by Problem I purchased the waterproof Otter Box and everyone that I called complained of an echo and hearing their own voice. Took the phone to AT&T and they let us know it was not the phone but the Otter Box causing the problem. When I removed the metal from the Box, it worked well. This cover has definate problems. Rated 1 out of 5 by Wish I could use for phone calls I love everything about this case except the fact that using the phone for calls is impossible! The person I'm talking to only hears what they say and I only hear mumbling. Otterbox replaced the case and still the same issue. Basically use this when I know I'm going to be around water and then have to take the case off. September 15, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by So-so After reading all the reviews first, I was happy to see I'm not the only one slightly upset with Otterbox about this case. Now, I've not experienced any issues with call quality or people not being able to hear me, which is a step up from the Lifeproof case I previously had...but I have the same issue as everyone else with the little mesh screens falling off after only having the phone for a few days. I am so worried that I am going to puncture the plastic covering the speakers. I wasn't happy with how quickly the phone showed dirt. My pretty pink case has black marks all over the front rubber cover. I chose this case over the Lifeproof because it was all pink. Lifeproof's pink case is only on the front. I also tried to take this case off to attach the lanyard to it, followed the instructions, and now the back plastic piece shows indentations from the quarter I had to use. That was within the first 10 minutes I had the case! The bottom port cover is nice...except when you want to charge your phone. You either have to swing it up so the piece sticks straight up on the phone, or to the side, sticking out past the case. It's really annoying, but not a complete deal breaker. The last issue I had with this case was how hard it is to push the buttons. I suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, which means I don't have a lot of wrist strength and my hands often go numb...making it nearly impossible for me to push the buttons on my phone. I will say after having the case for close to a month, that the bottom button seems to have loosened up some. I am anticipating that the other buttons will do the same in the future. I haven't completely tested the waterproofing capability of this case and definitely won't now with the mesh screen covers missing. I did take my phone to the beach in this case and my phone did get a little wet, with no damage. September 14, 2014

Unless you will be using your phone around water or snow everyday, I would go with the Defender. The Preserver is not made to talk on and frankly the waterproof system fails after less than 6 months.

I have the preserver cover for my regular s4 and am very disappointed. The sound quality gets so bad sometimes that I have had to hang up, remove the cover and call people back.

I have a Qi charging adapter that fits inside the standard S4 back cover and it works fine with the Preserver. I don't think an ovesized battery/back cover will fit in the case.

Yes it does. The only thing I have found wrong with the case is that when you talk to people the call quality on THEIR end is worse. I get reports from people I talk to that say they can hear their own echo and other such things. Call quality on my end has never been better, It just gets old hearing every conversation start with I CANT HEAR YOU, usually though they can it just sounds weird at first.
